Pledge “Mentor Nurses Upward and Outward"

I will mentor at least one nurse and promise to nurture their development of leadership abilities to become positive change agents, influencers and strategic leaders in our healthcare system to meet the demands of the ACA in 2014.

"I will mentor in the area of my skills base and expertise as an established leader within my discipline. I will do this for free for a minimum of six months (in my free time). The mentoring will be a combination of in person, phone calls or via email/Skype. The mentoring connection will be established by working collaboratively with the New York Future of Nursing Action Coalition and diverse partners committed to the mentorship of nurses. I am willing to take responsibility for promoting the Mentorship Pledge Bank but only if 150 other people will mentor at least one nurse regardless whether they are a nurse at the student, manager, director, or nurse executive level.

  • It is so important that we pledge to support Nurses in all settings and provide solid leadership and mentorship during this time of great change.

    Embrace the opportunities in 2013!

  • I posted the image of the Goddess Athena because she served as protector, advisor, patron, ally, and wise guide.

One passage in the book "The Mentor Connection in Nursing" prompted me to use the image of Athena. "A journey towards wisdom requires energy". A goal for the discipline of nursing is to develop wisdom keepers within the profession who will facilitate the emergence of a critical mass of nurse leaders for reforming the health care system.

  • I am convinced that nothing we do is more important than hiring and developing people. At the end of the day you bet on people, not on strategies.

  • Every nurse needs a mentor to guide, listen, encourage and facilitate their career journey and future professional development.

  • A great article in the NY Times: "A Good Mentor Never Tramples on Big Dreams"
  • In everyone's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.

  • If you go looking for a friend, you’re going to find they’re scarce. If you go out to be a friend, you’ll find them everywhere. - Zig Ziglar
  • The best way we can mentor the new generation of nurses is by mentoring students, especially graduate students. I have three with me right now!

  • Hello Wanda, my name is Leslie. I am a fan of your work. I truly admire and congratulate the amazing work that you are doing. I have been invited to be part of the Diversity Steering Council Committee for the Louisiana Action Coalition and I would love it if you could guide me, mentor me, perhaps even start a pledge like the one in this page for my own state coalition. I would love to hear back from you. Thank you, and God bless!
