More details
Google recently set up Google Map Maker to ask people to map various areas of the world with no available mapping data, by tracing over satellite images. The countries involved include many Caribbean islands, leading Ed Parsons of Google to express sadness that fieldwork was not involved. We thought it would be cool to have a similar thing for OpenStreetMap, but with fieldwork. :-)
So, if you pledge, you will spend one hour or more adding to OpenStreetMap by tracing over Yahoo! aerial imagery on a Caribbean island, and make a donation of £10 to the OpenStreetMap Foundation. (See below for the fieldwork.)
The list of islands, in the order we are going to tackle them, is as follows:
* Grenada (primary focus)
* British Virgin Islands
* St. Kitts and Nevis
* Cayman Islands
* Antigua and Barbuda
* St. Vincent and the Grenadines
* St. Lucia
* Netherlands Antilles
* Barbados
* Bahamas
* Trinidad and Tobago
* Jamaica
Subsequently, the OSMF may(*) choose one name at random from the list of pledgers who fulfilled their pledge and send them on a fieldwork trip. That is, the OSMF may buy them a return flight to one of those locations, and hand over some cash as hotel and spending money. That person would be expected to spend a week completing the map and evangelising OSM on the island. The choice of location would be a negotiation based on data quality at time of departure, with the OSMF having the final say. The timing would be the person's choice, allowing it to fit in with their schedule and budget.
(*) There is no promise, because then this would become a lottery. But then, we can't make the fieldworker promise to work on the map either. So it's trust on all sides.
