More details
Thunderbird (http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/product...) is an open source email client by the same people who brought you the Firefox browser. One of the features needed to make Thunderbird an Enterprise-level competitor to MS Outlook is the ability to edit a shared address book on a centralised server. LDAP, the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is the best way of doing this, and Thunderbird can already read from an LDAP server, but it needs to be able to write to it as well.
